Pasted below is my latest burger article from my SF Burger Examiner column. The article features Fifth Floor and the $25 bourbon, beer and burger deal from head chef David Bazirgan.  For the original article on Examiner.com please click HERE.

Praise for Fifth Floor

Aptly named for its location in the Palomar Hotel, Fifth Floor has quickly become one of San Francisco’s rising stars in the culinary playground. David Bazirgan, former head chef of Chez Papa Resto and more simply known as “Baz,” has taken on the position as new commander-in-chef at Fifth Floor, bringing his French cuisine expertise to the kitchen and good looks to the table. Well-known reviewer, Michael Bauer, recently bestowed a hefty 3.5 stars for the new Fifth Floor and since then curious customers have been packing in. (more…)

There are few things I love more than a hot, steaming bowl of spicy, Sichuan Mapo Tofu.  I always knew when my dad was making mapo tofu because the smell of fresh popping peppercorns would cause a coughing fit in our household.  Mapo tofu is a Chinese comfort food composed primarily of ground pork, soft tofu, and lots of Sichuan spices.  Served over a bowl of rice and you have a perfect senses-clearing meal. Copied below is my recent roundup of the city’s best steakhouses – Bourbon Steak, Bobo’s and 5A5 Steak Lounge. I have also included the LINK if you’d like to reference the original article on SF Station as well as other restaurant reviews.

With increasing public awareness of grass-fed beef, opportunities for whole beast dinners, and butcher celebrity, beef is experiencing a second coming in San Francisco. The only question that remains: Where do meat-loving diners saddle up? (more…)

Attached is my SF Station article on the Top Dishes of 2010.  There were an abundant number of good eats, but these one hedged out the competitors to be deemed “The Best.”  For the actual article, please click this LINK.

There was no shortage of good food in San Francisco this past year. New eateries Twenty Five Lusk, Mission Chinese Food, and Marlowe led the list of top dishes of 2010. (more…)

I’ve included the link (CLICK HERE) to my latest SF Station article on the recent SF Bay area sweet craving: whoopie pies.  Also, I have pasted in the review below with a couple photos if you’d prefer to just read it on SF Tao of Pao. More photos are included at the link above to SF Station as well as other reviews I’ve written for their food section.

2010 was the year of the cupcake in San Francisco. While restaurant patrons buttoned up their wallets, they still seemed to save money for frosting and cake. With December around the corner, what will be the next big thing for 2011? Keep an eye on the Northeast treat known as the Whoopie Pie that is popping up in eateries throughout the City. (more…)

Between grad school applications, trips to Asia, NYC, Philly and Miami, and then just general life in SF I’ve been a bit behind on my blog posts.  SF Station has been dominating my deliverables with articles on Greens and an Ice Cream Round Up, and one more coming out this Friday (stay tuned). Don’t worry though I’ve still been getting out to dine aplenty in this fine city of ours.

People are always asking, “Anne, where should I go eat? This place just opened, is it good? I have a date, what’s a good spot?”

Well, I may not be able to do a full-blown regular SF Tao of Pao review of each but I can list out the Top 5 Places I’d hit up ASAP. Some of them I’ve been to, others I’ve heard so much good press that they are in my queue to visit in the next month. (more…)

Under direction by Chef Annie Somerville, Greens restaurant has helped shape the vegetarian cause for the last 30 years.

Greens is vegetarian, but you will not find that fact mentioned on the menu. Somerville does this intentionally, calling the clientele more “flexitarian.” She focuses patrons on the depth of flavor and quality, organic ingredients rather than the absence of meat.

A bit of history: The San Francisco Zen Center opened back in 1962, and has influenced the San Francisco food scene in many ways. It pulled on the monastery bread-making practices to open popular Tassajara Bakery and started Green Gulch Farm. Following a desire to be self-sustaining, the Zen Center opened Greens in 1979. Click this LINK to my SF Station article on Ice Cream through the Agest in San Francisco. I’ve also pasted the article below with a couple photos for your viewing pleasure.

Ice cream these days is all about experimentation, but San Francisco plays host to a number of classic ice cream companies, as well. Businesses are branching out from more traditional flavors that echo warm childhood summers into more unchartered territory. The result? Satisfaction of the distinct appetites that define this very diverse city we call home. Check out a few of our favorite new and old school ice cream joints. (more…)
